The plans for a new health centre to be built on a former hospital site in Thornbury in a joint venture between Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB (BNSSG ICB) and South Gloucestershire Council have been made public.

The designs and plans for the new centre are being shared with local residents and patient groups for their views.

Last year, the Government invited BNSSG ICB to develop a business case to unlock £14.4million in funding to deliver a brand-new health centre.

The project will provide a new home for the two existing GP surgeries – Streamside Surgery and Severn Vale Family Practice – as well as consulting rooms for community-based health services delivered by Sirona care & health.

Shane Devlin, chief executive of BNSSG ICB, said the new health centre would form ‘a key part of the regeneration’ of the former Thornbury Hospital site.

‘Once finished, the health centre will provide both practices with the space and facilities needed to enable them to continue to deliver outstanding care for many years to come,’ he said.

The proposals will be submitted for planning consent in the autumn before being handed to the Department of Health and Social Care in March 2025, which will need to approve the project and the funding for it to proceed.

Cllr Adam Monk, South Gloucestershire Council cabinet member for corporate resources, encouraged residents and patients to give feedback on the plans ‘which we hope will deliver new and fit-for-purpose primary care facilities for them’.

‘We appreciate that the people of Thornbury have been waiting a long time for new facilities,’ he added.

At the same time, South Gloucestershire Council are also working on proposals to deliver an extra care housing scheme on the site.

The extra care housing scheme would be run by a specialist provider and offer residents the chance to live in their own homes while surrounded by the health and other support they need to retain their independence.

Residents are also able to view the plans and provide their comments on the designs online at: thornburyhealthcentre.commonplace.is/
