Six women from across the healthcare sector were celebrated today in Women’s Hour’s Power List 2013.

A showcase of the top 100 most powerful women in the UK, the list compiled by the BBC put chief medical officer (CMO) Professor Dame Sally Davies at number 6.

A showcase of the top 100 most powerful women in the UK, the list compiled by the BBC put chief medical officer (CMO) Professor Dame Sally Davies at number 6.

England’s first female CMO guides government decisions on topics like obesity and drug trials and is a haematologist by training.

With a budget of £1 million, Professor Dame Davies developed the National Institute for Health Research in 2006.

Although number 20, Nicola Sturgeon MSP, trained as a solicitor as Scottish Health Secretary she abolished prescription and hospital car park charges and is now Deputy First Minister of Scotland.

Also on the list is Clare Gerada MBE represents over 40,000 doctors in her post as Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) chair.

The first female chair in over 50 years trained in psychiatry and began her career a GP in Lambeth, London.

During her career Gerada has served as senior medical advisor to the Department of Health and director of primary care for the National Clinical Governance Team.

Graduate nurse and chief executive of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust Dame Julie Moore, co-founder of Specsavers and qualified optometrist Dame Mary Perkins and President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Professor Sue Bailey were also selected.
