Question in full:

What training is available, perhaps at universities or colleges in the UK, that might help bring me up to speed as a practice manager with the practicalities of what might be involved in commissioning so that I can participate?

A: From a general view there are a large number of practice management courses offered by Higher and Further education institutes including distance learning providers. For specific primary care management the Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers, Administrators and Receptionists (AMSPAR) offers a diploma in primary care management. This is a course provided at a number of centres across the country by City and Guilds. Similarly the Institute of Healthcare Management offers a Management of Health and Social Care (MHSC) programme and a Vocational Training Scheme for Practice Managers in association with Middlesex University. Further details of these courses can be found on the NHS Careers website: www.nhscareers.nhs.uk

Specifically in relation to the development of the Clinical Commissioning Groups ("CCGs") as a practice manager you may wish to get involved in the training which should be being provided to the CCG as part of its development of skills towards meeting the requirements of the authorisation process.

All CCGs are currently in a learning process, developing their commissioning skills and will be looking to ensure that appropriate training is provided to enable them to fulfil this role, with the training generally being sourced either through the CCG itself or via your local PCT Cluster.
