Two out of three health ministers unseated as Tories lose majority

Health ministers David Mowat and Nicola Blackwood have lost their seats as Tory MPs overnight, as voters face the uncertainty of a hung Parliament.

Mr Mowat, the health minister for primary care, lost his Warrington South seat to Labour candidate Faisal Rashid.

Meanwhile, public health lead Nicola Blackwood lost her Oxford West and Abingdon seat to Layla Moran of the Liberal Democrat party.

Ms Blackwood, who was in charge criticised childhood obesity strategy, lost out by just 800 votes.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has held onto his South West Surrey seat, despite losing 4.1% of his votes from 2015.

Former Tory Government health minister Ben Gummer also failed to be re-elected as the MP for Ipswich, losing to Labour’s Sandy Martin.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said she will attempt to form a minority Government with the backing of ‘friends and allies’ in Northern Ireland’s DUP.

However, the DUP responded by describing discussion of an agreement as ‘premature’.

The election resulted in a hung Parliament, which saw the Conservative party left with 318 MP – 12 fewer than before.

The Labour party however gained 29 seats bringing their total number of MPs up to 261.
