Telford and Wrekin CCG receives £2m reward for achieving end of year surplus

NHS England has given the West Midlands region £2m for achieving a surplus in the 2016/17 financial year.

NHS Telford and Wrekin CCG, which has a total budget of £14.2m, managed a surplus of £119,000 in 2016/17.

The CCG has said the money would be used to support ‘national NHS priorities’ in the area although the CCG is owed more than £1.3m, mostly from Telford & Wrekin Council.

The CCG has said the money would be used to support ‘national NHS priorities’ in the area although the CCG is owed more than £1.3m, mostly from Telford & Wrekin Council.

A recent financial report shows that the council owes the CCG £1,148,311, with the largest outstanding invoice sitting at £600,000.

A spokesperson for the CCG said the surplus was achieved through ‘careful management’, adding that the extra funding ‘is not a windfall’ but will be used to provide services in the area.

He added: ‘There are a number of services provided in partnership between the local authority and the CCG through the Better Care Fund and although there are a number of invoices that are outstanding, discussions are ongoing around these invoices and we believe that any issues will be resolved and invoices paid shortly.’

In January, the CCG received £42,000 from NHS England to spend on IT equipment, including £32,479 on new tablets and laptops, which was spent by the end of the financial year.

Meanwhile, neighbouring NHS Shropshire CCG is expecting a deficit of £25.9m after being placed in special measures last year.
