The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has appointed Liam Anstey as the regulator’s new director for Wales.

Mr Anstey, who previously worked as a media and public affairs head for British Medical Association (BMA), replaced Darren Huges on 11 November.

Having worked across the health and social care sector in leading communications roles for the BMA, GMC and the Royal College of Nursing, Mr Anstey brings experience and knowledge to the role, the GPhC said.

‘I am delighted to welcome Liam Anstey as our new Director for Wales,’ said Dunkin Rudkin, chief executive of the GPhC, ‘My colleagues and I are looking forward to working closely with Liam to make sure we respond effectively to key developments in Wales.’

Mr Anstey said: ‘I am delighted to be taking forward the GPhC’s work as director for Wales.

‘Throughout my career, I have focussed on patients and ensuring their safety was at the forefront of the minds of policymakers and health professionals. I look forward to working with stakeholders in Wales and ensuring that the GPhC’s decisions take into account the needs of patients and the public across Wales.’
