David Cameron’s new government must commit to The NHS Five Year Forward View and boosting the NHS with a minimum of £8bn, the Health Foundation, said today.

The reportwas published on 23 October 2014 and sets out a vision for the future of the NHS, developed by NHS England, Public Health England, Monitor, Health Education England, the Care Quality Commission and the NHS Trust Development Authority. Patient groups, clinicians and independent experts have also provided their advice to create a collective view of how the health service needs to change over the next five years if it is to close the widening gaps in the health of the population, quality of care and the funding of services.

Dr Jennifer Dixon, Chief Executive at the Health Foundation, said: “As an independent charity, we look forward to working with the newly-formed government over the coming parliament to help improve health and health care.

“We need the new government to commit to the manifesto set out by the NHS England last October – the Five Year Forward View. The government should back the funding pledges of an additional £8bn by 2020/21 as a minimum and cover immediate shortfalls in funding for 2015/16. The Secretary of State should work to three main objectives for the NHS- maintain or improve quality, transform care for the future and achieve financial balance.

“Better quality care often results in lower cost, but quality of care should win out if trade-offs are to be made. The challenges facing the NHS are complex and there are no easy answers – finding the best path forward for the British population will need the government to work constructively with frontline staff and managers, rather than adversarially, and to commit to no administrative reorganisation.”
