Trust Special Administrators (TSAs) have been given an extra month to find a way to make health services currently provided by Mid Staffordshire Hospitals “clinically and financially viable”.

Although the legislation states TSAs have 45 working days to come up with a solution, with a local consultation for 30 days afterwards, health sector regulator Monitor has granted an extension.

According to the TSAs – the group tasked with finding solutions for failing trusts – further discussions with local NHS providers and commissioners are necessary.

Dr David Bennett, chief executive at Monitor, said: "The TSAs have been set a complex and challenging task and, while any delay is frustrating for patients and staff, it is important to get it right for local patients.

"Monitor's Board recognised the scale of the challenges in identifying a solution that meets the needs of the local health economy and asked us to exercise even greater scrutiny at this critical stage."

The TSAs have also been given a 10 working day extension to the public consultation period to take account of the August holiday period.

The draft report will now be published by 31 July 2013 with the consultation starting at the beginning of August and finishing by the beginning of October 2013.

Clinician Dr Hugo Mascie-Taylor and Alan Bloom of Ernst and Young were appointed TSAs for Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust in April this year.
