Norman Lamb, minister of state for care and support services has written to Jeremy Hunt, secretary of state for health and Andy Burnham, shadow secretary of state for health, requesting that they pledge to invest £8bn into the NHS by 2020.

He wrote: “There are long-term challenges facing the NHS and all parts of the UK face growing pressures.

“Those pressures were highlighted just this week when senior doctors warned that more than 400,000 extra patients came to A&E last year compared to 2013.

Lamb also highlighted how mental healthcare facilities and the prevention of ill health should be prioritised.

His statement comes following the shortfall identified by NHS England’s chief executive, Simon Stevens, in the Five Year Forward View.

Lamb’s letter continued: “Simon Stevens, the Chief Executive of NHS England […] stated that £8bn, combined with efficiencies and real change in the way care is provided, would ensure our NHS remains sustainable.”
