The People’s Health Trust has said it will begin focusing its funding on the groups of people most at risk of poor health and of dying younger.

Its first round of grants will fund activities to reduce isolation among older people, support for informal carers – and in particular young carers – people with dementia and projects aimed at creating healthier environments.

This includes: respite for carers, support for young adults with learning difficulties to live independently and ways of improving the quality and availability of food in local areas.
The organisation has said it will not fund services normally financed by public agencies.
“The People’s Health Trust has an unprecedented opportunity to work with communities to identify and fund local action to tackle health inequalities across England, Scotland and Wales,” said Professor Jennie Popay, chair of the People’s Health Trust.
“We will ensure that local people have a real say in how this new money is spent to improve health and wellbeing in their neighbourhoods.”
The People’s Health Trust is funded by 51 local society lotteries from the ‘good causes money’ raised by The Health Lottery.
An independent board of trustees will decide how The People’s Health Trust money will be spent.
Twenty pence out of every £1 lottery ticket bought will be used to fund projects in Local Lottery Areas.
The Health Lottery is due to launch in October.
