A GP from Hampshire has won the coveted ‘General Practitioner of the Year’ title at the inaugural General Practice Awards 2012 for her work on promoting sexual health in the area.

More than 650 healthcare professionals came together to celebrate the work of general practice teams up and down the UK at a glittering awards ceremony at the Hilton hotel in Park Lane, London yesterday (1 November 2012).

Dr Lesley Rosling from Southlea Group Practice, Aldershot received the award, which was presented by Dr Peter Swinyard, chair of the Family Doctor Association to cheers from her colleagues.

"I am still a little shocked and in awe of the whole thing," she said.

"I see the award as a force for good. We will use it to develop the project and raise more funds to make more of a difference in our area."

Speaking about the evening as a whole, Dr Rosling gushed that it was an "amazing and humbling" experience.

"It was such an elegant affair and I accept this award on behalf of the fantastic practice team.

Rosling led on an innovative new project that promotes sexual health to the Nepalese community in her area.

The General Practice Awards 2012 was hosted by GP and comedian Dr Phil Hammond who poked fun at senior politicians and NHS training styles.

On a more serious note, Dr Hammond was keen to encourage GP teams to learn from the events of Mid-Staffordshire, Winterbourne View and the Jimmy Saville case, and implored them to have the courage to whistleblow on poor patient care or patient safety issues.

The keynote speech was delivered by Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham, who thanked GP teams for “turning around” the NHS during his time as Secretary of State and asked for help in coming up with the “big alternative” to the current reform plans.
