City and Hackney clinical commissioning group (CCG) has awarded a £6.4 million out of hours contract to a group of local GPs.
The City and Hackney Urgent Healthcare Social Enterprise (CHUHSE) bid for the service earlier this year, but the current provider’s contract was temporarily extended.

City and Hackney CCG has now awarded the £6.4 million contract to the not-for-profit group in the hopes of reducing A&E attendances.
Currently the out of hours care deal is worth £4.8 million, but the CCG believes that the funding gap will be mitigated by the reduction in A&E activity.
A statement from City and Hackney said: “The tariffs for A&E activity are considerably more than the out-of-hours consultation tariff and a significant reduction in A&E activity is expected over the lifetime of the contract as the provider increases public awareness and confidence in the GP out-of-hours service.
“Additionally, by having a more local service for City and Hackney residents, there is greater opportunity for better integration across the whole of primary care and improved continuity of care for patients.”
Plans to mitigate the risks of investing in a new start-up were noted, but the CCG said the CHUHSE is expected to “deliver a high quality service and support the reduction in spend elsewhere in the health economy”.
