In total, 38 CCGs in Wave 4 were authorised with conditions, but they “should be able to discharge” many of them in “a short timeframe” according to Dame Barbara Hakin, national director for commissioning development at the NHS CB.
Results
Seven CCGs have been given “higher-level support requirements” otherwise known as ‘legal directions’:
• NHS Basildon and Brentwood CCG
• NHS Croydon CCG
• NHS East Surrey CCG
• NHS Enfield CCG
• NHS High Weald Lewes Havens CCG
• NHS Thurrock CCG
• NHS Waltham Forest CCG
The NHS Commissioning Board said 10 CCGs met all 119 criteria and the group as a whole “demonstrated excellence and a very high level of achievement”.
‘Fantastic progress’
“CCGs have made fantastic progress in a very short time,” Hakin said.
“It has always been clear that some of the new organisations would be at different stages to others, often dependent on their previous commissioning activities.”
Reassessment
In total, 43 of the 211 CCGs have met all criteria for authorisation, 168 have been authorised with conditions, and 15 have been authorised with legal directions.
Almost half (46%) of CCGs with conditions were in Wave 4.
Later this month NHS CB will re-assess CCGs which were authorised in the first three waves, and Wave 4 CCGs will be reviewed in June 2013.
Charles Alessi, chair of NHS Clinical Commissioners (NHSCC) said: “As the Commissioning Board reviews their progress later this month, we expect many of the conditions placed on CCGs to be removed or down-graded.
“There will be many challenges ahead but by sharing best practice, working together and driving forward change, CCGs with NHSCC should be well placed to transform and modernise patient care.”
