A growing number of CCGs are now rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, the latest assessment of the commissioning groups has revealed.
Nearly two thirds (64%) of CCGs in England are now rated as ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’, an increase from 58% in the previous year, according to the CCG Annual Assessment 2018/19 published this week (10 July),
However, although 10 CCGs have seen their rating rise from good to outstanding, four have dropped from outstanding to good, while five have been newly rated inadequate.
Every year, CCGs are assessed against nationally agreed standards that are referred to as the Improvement and Assessment Framework. NHS England rates CCGs on the basis of how sustainable they are, on the quality of their leadership and on how they are helping to improve the health of their population, among other factors.
CCGs can be rates as outstanding, good, requires improvement, or inadequate.
Commenting of this year’s assessment, NHS Clinical Commissioners chief executive Julie Wood said that these results show that CCGs are ‘working effectively’.
She said: ‘The annual assessment is a useful marker for how well CCGs are performing and to hold them accountable.’
However, she added that NHS CC will work with NHS England to improve future assessment frameworks to make sure they reflect the changes that the NHS is currently undergoing.
