Carers and services users are changing the shape of mental health services in Bedfordshire by helping Bedfordshire CCG select a new provider.

The provider – East London Foundation Trust (ELFT) – is due to take over running mental health services in the county on 1 April.

Last year, when the clinical commissioning group (CCG) started looking for a new provider, it brought together a group of service users and carers to contribute to the selection process.

The provider – East London Foundation Trust (ELFT) – is due to take over running mental health services in the county on 1 April.

Last year, when the clinical commissioning group (CCG) started looking for a new provider, it brought together a group of service users and carers to contribute to the selection process.

The CCG believes this is the first time an NHS commissioner has involved service users and carers in this way.

Bedfordshire GP and Bedfordshire CCG clinical lead for mental health Dr Judy Baxter said: “The involvement of service users and carers has been invaluable and they have helped to shape the outcomes on which the new service is to be based.”
