A London hospital has agreed a 15-year deal to  create an orthopaedic centre of excellence.

Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Johnson & Johnson Managed Services are entering into a partnership to expand and redevelop the orthopaedic centre at Guy’s Hospital.

They will develop an extra operating theatre in the first year and eight new theatres by the third year of the deal.

There will also be an education and training hub, and a dedicated research space aimed at finding ways to  improve  clinical outcomes.

Johnson and Johnson will streamline the supply chain  for procuring services, surgical instruments  and implants.

The company has a longstanding relationship with the hospital as a supplier and helped develop the Care4Today programme. It helps patients take a more active role in getting ready for surgery and recovering afterwards, with support in hospital and at home. It means hip and knee replacement patients are going home after one or two days, instead of a week.

The hospital has also performed its first joint replacement as an outpatient procedure.

The trust’s clinical director Peter Earnshaw said the partnership  ‘will further increase the time that frontline clinicians can focus on patient care and enable us to identify opportunities to be at the forefront of new developments in orthopaedic care.’

Michelle Brennan, Johnson & Johnson Medical  Devices ’s company group chair for Europe, the Middle East and Africa said the collaboration  is part of its commitment  to  help providers ‘address  their most pressing challenges’.
