A £4.5 million redevelopment project at John Coupland Hospital in Gainsborough has been completed and will start welcoming Lincolnshire patients in the coming weeks.
The project has transformed the former Morton Suite into the new Scotter Ward, a state-of-the-art facility on the hospital’s ground floor.
Specially designed to serve community needs, Scotter Ward provides short-term inpatient care and rehabilitation and will play an important role in preventing unnecessary admissions to larger hospitals.
By offering dedicated care within the Lincolnshire community, Scotter Ward ensures patients who are not quite ready to return home receive the ongoing support they need.
The space includes a dedicated palliative care suite and four beds for the stroke pathway. And there is a versatile day room for therapy and visits, an expanded treatment area and enhanced storage.
The facility has 17 beds, including five single bedrooms and three rooms containing four beds.
The reimagined ward has a suite of specialised design features to support people with dementia, including pastel colour schemes and gentle lighting.
Local clinicians and healthcare teams in Lincolnshire worked with NHS Property Services to ensure the space was designed to meet the needs of both patients and staff.
For example, the absence of central nursing stations and the inclusion of smaller desks within each bay has created a more open, homely atmosphere.
Scotter Ward clinical team lead, Donna Phillips, said it was ‘wonderful to see all of the detailed planning, hard work and discussions come to fruition’.
