Tom Abell has taken up his post as the new chief executive (CEO) of NHS Mid and South Essex.
As of 8 August, he has become CEO, replacing Tracy Dowling, who has been interim chief executive for the past nine months.
Announced in May, Mr Abell’s appointment comes after a career in health care spanning more than 20 years, based mainly in mid- and south Essex.
Mr Abell joins from East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust, where he has held the position of chief executive since August 2021, leading the organisation during its successful journey out of special measures.
He was also previously deputy chief executive officer at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust from April 2020 to July 2021, and chief transformation officer at Mid Essex Hospitals for three years prior to that. He was also senior director at Basildon and Brentwood Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).
Mr Abell said it was ‘fantastic’ to join NHS Mid and South Essex on the next stage of its journey.
‘We do have some immediate issues, not least in ensuring we better meet the needs of our local residents, supporting our staff, and making sure we are spending taxpayers’ money wisely but within our means,’ he said.
