NHS England has provided an indicative cost review of three dementia care models, to support clinical commissioners with service development.

The Models of Dementia Assessment and Diagnosis: Indicative Cost Review reveals three models of dementia assessment and diagnosis currently being used in dementia care in the NHS in England.

It presents the indicative costs for each model along with the benefits for patients and carers, and considerations about developing the service, giving an insight into how a local clinical commissioning group (CCG) might approach a review of its local service with an aim to making improvements in their current practice.

These three models are of Gnosall Surgery (a primary care managed service with specialist outreach) Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust Memory
Protection Services (a specialist care led service, supported by primary care) and Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (an entirely specialist led service).

For Gnosall their practice’s use of all secondary health care cost £450,0006 less per year than predicted for patients in this age band, whereas Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust Memory Protection Services is directly accessible to the public via one telephone number or primary care and facilitated continuity of care through the GP, with specialist services supporting primary care clinicians to manage the person with dementia and their carer(s).

Similarly Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust is a major NHS provider of community and mental health services to people in Rotherham, Doncaster, North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire and Manchester. The benefits of their care model was deemed to be the referral to a single point of access, a single assessment so the patient only gets asked to give information once, and fast access to a range of other specialist services when required, making the process more efficient.
