Sandwell and Birmingham clinical commissioning group (CCG) was awarded Commissioner of the Year at the General Practice Awards last night.
The CCG’s team was presented with a trophy at the central London awards for a variety of innovative schemes.
During 2014 Sandwell and Birmingham CCG decided to:
– Divide the CCG into five local commissioning groups with delegated authority.
– Appoint 22 clinical leaders to drive change across 13 priority areas.

During 2014 Sandwell and Birmingham CCG decided to:
– Divide the CCG into five local commissioning groups with delegated authority.
– Appoint 22 clinical leaders to drive change across 13 priority areas.
– Appoint 12 ‘health community’ leaders to develop plans based on patient need.
Clinical leader Dr Gwyn Harris alone led £2.5 million in savings through improving prescription costs.
Locally more than 800 patients, stakeholders and clinicians were engaged in a community nursing overhaul by Dr Pri Hallan.
And Dr Shahid Salman helped the CCG bring diabetes care closer to home by ensuring GPs have direct access to expert diabetes consultants.
Responses to the 2014 360 Stakeholder Survey show a high level of engagement with members. Most (85%) said there is “clear and visible” leadership in the CCG.
Many (65%) believe the CCG is delivering continued quality improvements.
A statement that accompanied the application, which has been seen by The Commissioning Review, states: “We believe that our model is one that should be adopted by all CCGs, to ensure the member voice is truly represented in commissioning decisions.
“We are proud of our flexibility and ability to listen to member views and, as a result, are confident our model is sustainable. Already we have adapted to give our members a greater voice, and to support them to lead local commissioning projects that will benefit our wider population.”
