The chair of the RCGP has called upon a private law firm to produce some much-needed guidance to support CCGs in coping with disengaged practices. 

Speaking at a GPB commissioning roundtable last week (13 March), Dr Clare Gerada said there is a lack of centrally written guidance to advise how CCGs and their participating GP practices alike cope when conflicts arise.

HealthSecretary Andrew Lansley has named Professor Malcolm Grant as his “preferredchoice” to head up the new NHS Commissioning Board.

Grant,who is currently President and Provost of University College London (UCL), isexpected to take up the post of Chair of the new body in October 2011.

Lansley's "preferred choice" is a qualified barrister and academiclawyer with experience of public service, including the Local GovernmentCommission, Higher Education Funding Council for England and as a UK BusinessAmbassador.

The idea that the Secretary of State for Health should have legal responsibility for the NHS "does not hold good today", said Tory Health Minister Lord Howe.

Kicking off the second reading of the Health and Social Care Bill in the House of Lords today (11 October), Lord Howe said the proposed NHS reforms are of "profound importance" for patients.

The NHS Alliance and the National Association of Primary Care (NAPC) have teamed up to form an independent body to give clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) a "united voice".

The coalition aims to ensure CCGs are at the heart of the new NHS as opposed to "being controlled by the centre and overburdened by statutory responsibilities."
