The survey, published yesterday (9 March) revealed that despite great emphasis is placed on integrated care for patients, uncertainty looms around what regulatory changes this could bring.

Moving to electronic first outpatient referrals only from October 2018 will halve the number of missed appointments – from 10 to 5% – and produce NHS savings of no less than £50m.

A&E admissions for end of life care could cost the NHS more in the future

The annual cost of emergency admissions to hospital for people in the last year of life could almost double over the next 20 years, a charity has warned.

Analysis by UK-based charity Marie Curie published yesterday (21 March) revealed that there will be 706,000 projected deaths in 2038, which is a 23% increase on 2016.

In 2016, the NHS spent £2.5bn on 1.6 million emergency admissions for people in the last year of their life in Britain, the charity warned.
