First minister Nicola Sturgeon today confirmed that Scottish National Party (SNP) MPs aim to raise carers’ allowance to the same level as job seekers’ allowance in Scotland.

This would mean more than 100,000 unpaid carers in Scotland would receive up to £600 extra each year, or £73 weekly, creating an annual extra cost of up to £60m annually.

Sturgeon said: “Across Scotland our 100,000 carers do an invaluable job, but yet they are some of the people who will have been hit hardest by the recession and Westminster austerity.”

SNP plans to bring forward legislation to recognise the role carers play, ensure all adult carers are entitled to their own support plan and establish local carer advice and information centres.
