Dr Sarah Wollaston has been reelected to chair the Health Select Committee in charge of examining the policy, administration and expenditure of the Department of Health.

The MP for Totnes was the only nomination for the position and was therefore elected unopposed.

After the announcement of her election, she said: ‘I'm delighted to be returned as the Chair and look forward to working with MPs from across the Commons on behalf of those who use health services now and in the future.’

Dr Wollaston has chaired the committee since 2014, during which time she has become known for her criticism of the Department of Health despite being a Tory MP herself.

In March, she criticised ‘missed opportunities’ in the Government childhood obesity strategy.

Meanwhile last year, Dr Wollaston told the Government to stop giving the ‘misleading’ impression that the NHS is being given a £10bn cash boost by 2020.

Dr Wollaston will formally take up position as chair of the committee when the remaining members of the committee have been named by the House.

She was nominated by 15 members of her own party, including physician Dr Dan Poulter MP, and five members of other parties, including surgeon and SNP MP, Dr Philippa Whitford.
