NHS England announces £5m regional innovation fund

A £5 million Regional Innovation Fund (RIF) is available this year to promote the adoption of innovation and the spread of best practice across the NHS.

The fund is open to NHS England, as well as the NHS and Academic Health Science Networks (ASHNs).

The money should be used to deliver significant improvements in quality and efficiency through innovation.

Bids can be developed alone, or through collaboration with other partners such as providers, local government, the third-sector, private healthcare and industry.

According to NHS England, the RIF is an important opportunity to bring in different types of expertise or capacity to support the adoption of current innovations or the development of new ideas.

RIF applications can either be:

a) Aligned to supporting the spread and adoption of current innovations promoted within the NHS and NHS England.

b) To support the development or adoption of new ideas.

An Independent Clinical Panel, chaired by Miles Ayling, NHS England's director of innovation, NHS England, will be put in place to assess proposals.

The closing date for submitting applications is 5pm on 6 December 2013. All awards made through the fund will be allocated by the end of December 2013.
