CCG increases community stoma care

CCG increases community stoma care
23 September 2013

A clinical commissioning group (CCG) is working to bring better care of patients with stoma into the community.
The proposed model would see patients offered increased, more frequent advice and a reduction in the need for emergency attendances at hospital.
A stoma is a surgical opening to the skin which connects a portion of the body cavity to the outside environment, often to a bag.
The CCG will also be establishing an ‘innovation forum’ to address new ideas and best practice opportunities.

Ashford CCG chair Dr Navin Kumata said: "One of our priorities as health commissioners is to improve the health and well-being of the population of Ashford.
“We hope an innovation forum would enlighten us with new ways to address complex priority areas."
At the most recent meeting Ashford CCG also proposed that patients with deep vein thrombosis would also have care delivered closer to home. A new doctor-led service would see more timely diagnosis and initiation of treatment.
