Cancer data release to improve "underperforming" CCGs

NHS England has released local one-year survival rates for all cancers in England within the CCG Outcomes Indicator Set.

MP and chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer (APPGC), John Baron said the “focus on earlier diagnosis” for cancer has been an key campaign since 2009 and he believed making the figures available is vital to improving services within each CCG.

He said: “Putting one-year cancer survival figures up in lights will encourage underperforming CCGs to promote initiatives to improve earlier diagnosis. These could include better uptake of screening, better GP training, access to diagnostic tests at Primary Care or better awareness campaigns.

"My Parliamentary colleagues and I will be working with NHS England and the government to ensure that this new information is put to good use. With this vital tool in the toolbox, the NHS will start to improve survival rates with a view to matching its peers on the Continent. This is vital if the government.”

The CCG Outcomes Indicator Set is a tool for assessing the progress of CCGs.
